What you can't mint

You can mint a market on almost anything people argue about: sports, crypto, politics, culture, tech, science, the weather, even a personal challenge. A few kinds of market are off limits, and the review at mint time checks for them.

This page is a plain summary. The Acceptable Use and Prohibited Markets Policy is the binding version.

Harm

  • Anything about someone's death, injury or harm, public figures included.
  • Anything that could reward violence, terrorism or a crime, even if the wording doesn't say so.
  • Suicide or self-harm.
  • Casualty counts from wars, disasters, epidemics or accidents.
  • Animal cruelty, blood sports, or the death or injury of a specific animal.

Storms and earthquakes are fine when the market is about the event itself, such as a hurricane's path or category. They're off limits when they turn on human suffering.

People

  • Hate or harassment aimed at anyone, or any group, for who they are.
  • Doxxing, stalking or targeting a person.
  • The private life of anyone who isn't a public figure: health, relationships, pregnancy, location and the like.
  • Anything involving children.
  • Rumours or allegations that could damage someone's reputation, including speculation that a named person committed a crime.
  • Sexual content, and anything involving sexual abuse or exploitation.

Public figures are fine when the market is about their public role, such as whether a leader finishes their term.

Markets that can't resolve fairly

  • Circular markets that resolve on their own price, volume or result.
  • Vague or subjective questions with no clear answer and no named judge. "Who wins the debate?" doesn't work.
  • Impossible or supernatural outcomes that no source could ever confirm. Unlikely events are fine: an asteroid strike or the discovery of alien life can be minted.
  • Outcomes you control. You can't mint a market you could decide yourself to profit from it. A personal challenge is fine if the market clearly says you control the outcome.
  • Private information. Nothing that needs insider knowledge, unannounced company results or unpublished government decisions to resolve.
  • Misleading wording meant to be read one way and resolved another.

Money and chance

  • Individual stocks. No markets on a single company's share price or company-specific financial events. Broad indexes and macro figures can be fine.
  • Pure chance. No dice, card draws, random numbers, lotteries or casino games.

Sanctions and regulated events

  • Nothing involving sanctioned people, entities or countries, or the places listed in the Prohibited Jurisdictions Policy.
  • Elections, court cases and regulatory decisions are allowed only where markets on them are lawful, and never in a way that could pressure the decision-maker.

Playing the system

  • Spam or duplicate markets.
  • Disguised wording, misspellings or hidden instructions meant to slip past the review or influence Fermah Kernel.
  • Markets made just to test where the limits are.
  • Using someone else's brand to suggest they're involved, or copying protected content.

Sources

On a public market, you don't name the source. Fermah Kernel uses the listed Resolution Sources, or Ultramint's feeds for an AI market.

You can name your own source only in a Custom Source market, inside a private Town. Even then, you can't use a source you control, and you can't change it after minting. See Custom Source markets.

Politics is allowed

Elections, legislation, appointments, diplomacy and treaties are all fair game, as long as the market follows the rules above. "Will the two countries sign a ceasefire?" works. A market on casualties or attacks doesn't.

What happens if a market breaks the rules

The review stops most problem markets before they're minted. If one gets through, Ultramint can:

  • hide it from discovery
  • pause buying or void it, on a public market, with everyone refunded and no fee
  • withhold the creator's earnings from it
  • restrict or close the creator's account

Ultramint can't pause, void or change a Members only market. Its creator is still bound by these rules.
